How to Improve Your Website with Google Toolbar
Step 1
Want to improve the way Google views your website? Use Google Toolbar to help with your search engine optimization (SEO). Check your website's popularity and keyword density, and find your site in multiple Google search engines.
First download and install Google Toolbar. It is a free download for Firefox (Mac or Windows) or IE (which only does Windows.) Google Toolbar has a lot more options these days, and the focus is on things like Sidewiki and sharing, but that doesn't mean you can't still use things like the very handy PageRank tool to diagnose and help your website's search results.
Step 2
Search for Your Site
Search for your website using keywords that you feel best represent your site. You may find it helpful to review these tips for using Google effectively.
If you cannot find your site on the first page of results, try adding the name of your business or the URL of the website to your search terms. If you still get no results, you may need to submit your site to Google. Step 3
Check Your PageRank
Google considers PageRank to be a measure of how important a web page is, and pages with higher PageRank are more likely to appear first in search results. PageRank is determined by how many quality websites link to your website.
The PageRank tool on the Google Toolbar displays a green bar to represent the score on a scale of one to ten. Hover your cursor over the PageRank tool, and a tool tip will appear with the exact score. If you have a low PageRank score, work on promoting your website. Find valid reasons why higher ranking sites should link to your content, and request it. Do not buy links or spam discussion boards, since this is considered to be "black hat SEO" and may land you in Google jail.
Step 4
Check Your Keyword Density
Keyword density is a measure of how often a keyword or keyword phrase is used in your web page. Google uses this as a factor to determine how relevant your web site is in a search. To check how often your keywords are used in your page, use the Google search engine to search for your keywords. Next, click on the highlighting tool in the Google Toolbar. It looks like the tip of a highlighting pen. This will highlight the keywords you used in your last Google search.
Finally, type the URL of your website in the browser window. You don't have to follow a link for the keywords to be highlighted.
Step 5
Look at Other Google Search Engines
Images, Maps, and News. Think about which search engines are appropriate for your website, and check them to make sure your website is listed. You can check for keyword density at the same time.
If your website isn't listed with the appropriate Google search engine, register it with that search engine. For instance, a business should be listed in Google Shopping and possibly Google Maps. A news website should be listed in Google News. For more information about Google's other search engines, check out this tutorial on exploring more Google options.
